How much time and effort should I put in in getting the various leaks stopped on my car? I've read things like, "it is a Chevy engine, they all leak." I think I have a leak in my oil pan, power steering and differential (which I had replaced last year and should be under warranty). I really hate driving my car and then after it sits overnight checking the ground to see where the surprises are...if any
I have an 1973 with an L-48...no modifications really
Any suggestions or thoughts/opinions would be appreciated
Usually, leaks come from poorly installed (incorrect) gaskets, loose bolts, etc. Check oil pan bolts for tightness - they do sometimes vibrate loose. Check the differential drain plug, and/or look for leaking at the hubs. You can eliminate leaks on these cars!
The cork oil pan gaskets are crap in this day and age. I highly recommend the Felpro one-piece pan gasket. The bolt holes have plastic grommets that prevent the bolts from squeezing the gasket out of alignment.
Those plastic 'SnapUps" come with the kit and make installation easy. Ditto the bolts and star washers. I don't have any financial interest in these gaskets - they do work! If you have cork valve cover gaskets, dump them for rubber/neoprene gaskets. Big difference.
