I was looking at manifolds on Summit and found an LT1/TPI style Edelbrock manifold for the BBC. Has anyone seen this before? Can it be operated with a SBC harness with larger fuel injectors, larger throttle body and a reprogrammed computer?. There is one for the BBC and one for the SBC and they appear to mabe be designed for the the TPI type electronics.
I always thought it would be great to have a TPI type of system on a BB. There was a forum member on hear about a year ago trying to fabricate this type of set up.
I don't think this manifold for the BB has been around very long.
This is an example of what i'm talking about. I had seen just the manifold and not the entire system. I just can't find the manifold by it self now and it was just a couple of weeks ago. The manifold by it self was around $400 and my thought was the system could be built on a budget by modifying the SBC system.

You're right but I think the price of the pieces you have to add to the manifold will probably cost as much as the Edelbrock system. In round numbers, here are the big parts you mention:
$500 Manifold
$480 Fuel Injectors
$130 Fuel Rails
$332 Throttle Body
$150 Fuel Pump & Regulator
$500 Computer
$350 Distributor
-----
$2,442 Total
You still need a bunch of miscellaneous stuff to put it together:
$100 Oxygen Sensor
$300 Sensors (knock, temp, etc.)
$100 Fuel Lines
$520 Painless EFI Harness for GM 7.4 V8
-----
$1020 Total
------
$3,462 Grand Total
$3,631.95 is Summit's price for the complete system along with the software and hand-held programmer (and Edelbrock technical support) along with a warranty. Seems worth the $170 extra.
The do-it-yourself setup doesn't include the custom programming or dyno tuning time ($150 per hour?) or fabrication of any of the brackets for throttle linkage, transmission linkage. Neither setup includes a new hood. The top of that Edelbrock manifold is 9.6 inches tall, measured from the block-to-manifold sealing surface to the top of the TPI. I'm not sure an L-88 hood provides that much clearance so it might be a custom hood.

I've been interested in putting EFI on my 72 big block but it's pretty far down the list of things that need to be done, like steering, brakes, paint and interior. I'm assuming by "TPI type of system" you mean the ram manifold style as opposed to the carburetor style. Edelbrock, Holley and Accel offer the down-draft carburetor style throttle body systems (for a little less than the Ram-style Edelbrock). GM Performance offers a Ram-style TPI injection system that comes on the Ram Jet 502. It was designed for the Gen VI big block rather than the Mark IV so I don't know if it can even be modified to work.
I don't think this manifold for the BB has been around very long.
I went to the Edelbrock site and they've been posting stuff about the Pro Flo XT system since 2008. Not sure when the BB setup came out but one post in April 2009 mentions that the 3557 system for the BB is not available yet.
Thanks Bob for the detailed reply. I would have never known what it would take to build a system. I see now that the Edelbrock system is well worth the money.
My only remaining thought between the Edelbrock system and GM parts would be availability of parts anyware. Maybe not a concern.
I have collected parts to build a BB and stoped when I sold my 80. With the 78 I was thinking of going 383 just so I could run the TPI in maybe a FAST manifold with GM transplant system. Now that a system is available for the BB my thought are changing.
That Edelbrock manifold is tall and maybe someone will tell us if the L88 hood will provide the clearance. I wouldn't want a hood much taller than the L88.
I'm now surprised that no one has this system on their BB C3.
