I was under the hood yesterday seeing how it seals.. reference the interior heat problem thread.. anyway I remembered that a friend said I needed a hood blanket.. There's nothing between the hood and the engine.. Should there be? He said that the heat will crack or spider my paint.. Thoughts? Also there was a rubber gasket on the hood that I guess is to seal the compartment but it only goes half way around the hood.. Starts at mid hood on one side..across the windshiled side of the hood and down the other.. Is it supose to go all the way around and down as far as the radiator?
There should be a fiberglass blanket on the underside of the hood, held on with plastic retainers. I just ordered 1 yesterday for my 77. $39.99 for the blanket and $3.00 each for the retainers at Corvette America, who has them in stock.
I don't believe an '80 model was build with a hood blanket. My '76 has one that I replaced last year, and I have always heard that it's needed to prevent the paint from blistering. Could be one of those wives tales.
I'd like to hear more opinions on this. Mine would sure look better if I could remove it and painted the underside of the hood flat black.
I've never seen an 80 that had the blanket, 79 and 81 had them. Sort of strange, but I haven't found any of the parts houses that list one for the 80 (or the 81-82 either.) There isn't any reason why you couldn't add one though. The local 'vette repair guy, gets replacement insulation from the Chevy dealer. He says that the insulation for early 80's Chevy pickups is the same as the stuff under the hood of 76-79 Corvettes and works as a good replacement at $25.00 from the dealer.
My '68 doesn't have one - had it for 4 yrs. and no paint blisters or cracks from heat & it's a Big Block.
The only cars that suffer from paint-on-the hood problems were late-80's fords.... cheap paint, poor hood insulation.
I feel it's an aesthetic thing. -Originality ? - you got me on that one.
Koz: You are correct in that the weather stripping on the hood did not go completely around. It just goes across the back and down the sides a few inches.
