The PO of my car told me that he put big block springs in the front of my vette. Are big block springs noticeably stiffer? I would think they are, but i'm just making sure
Hi 74,
The NCRS Tech Info Manual indicates that BB front springs were each rated at 57 lbs greater than the SB springs. 720/777.
Whether the car had a/c affected the spring that was installed too.

Alan

Well, I don't know what the NCRS book says, but I was under the impression that the stock bb springs were 280#, and the F41 springs were 550#.
I don't memorize this kind of stuff, but the book info sounds kinda odd.
Hi 69,
From 74's question I thought he was asking about the sprung loads a sb or bb front spring carried. 720 sb....777 bb. The bb spring carries more load but isn't 'stiffer'.
I believe your numbers are the lb/in rate the spring displays at full bounce. I think these number describe a springs performance. I guess they would indicate the difference between a standard spring (sb or bb) and a spring used as part of the F-41 option for example.
I'm sorry if the info I relayed was mis-leading.

Alan

So BB springs wouldn't offer any kind of improved handling?
Hi 87/74,
My understanding is that to improve handling with stock components you'd install the optional F-41 springs and swaybars.
If stock doesn't matter, then the whole after-market suspension up-grade world is open to you!

Don't go shopping for springs and/or bars a la carte unless you fully understand what you're doing, or you could well end up making things worse, or even dangerous, tho stiffening the fronts alone would just make the car understeer ("push", for NastyCar viewers) more than it probably already does. Until you're ready for the deep end, I suggest pretty much following the menu of typically available spring/bar combinations (together on both ends of the car), which should keep you from getting in too far over your head.
