Did you just buy the car and this is what you have, or did this just start happening? They are completely different wiring circuits. The stop light is a dark green wire, and the backup light is a light green wire. A previous owner (referred to here as Bubba) might have done some wiring and wired the 2 greens backwards. If you put the car in reverse, does the taillight come on? if so, reversing the 2 green wires should fix it. Beware, one wiring mistake might mean there are more. Check each circuit.

Someone has joined the power lines going to the brake lights and the backup lights. Most likely that will be located with the wiring at those lights inside the rear panel on the car. There is no "easy" way to hook those two light sets together in the dash or tranny tunnel area.
It could be that a PO wanted to have all four lights as brake lights and wired it that way. The most recent seller may have exchanged the inner lenses to return them to 'stock' configuration without dealing with the wiring issue.

the easiest way to check is with the motor off put transmission in reverse gear, than turn ignition to on and go back and observe which of the four lights are lit up. chances are the light sockets are inserted wrong. twist out and reinstall in correct spot.
