Ok just ran the engine with the belts off.

No vibes. Smooth as can be.

Since my water pump pulley feels wobbly (technical term mind you) even though it isn't leaking then I think that's where my investigation will head.

The only other options are.

Balancer and pulley

Power steering pump and pulley

Alternator/pulley

I just went through this with my 1980 last week, but with mine it would sound fine when started, only after running a while would I hear the noise of water pump going out. when slowing from highway speed I would hear a whistling and clicking. Then the day it went, I started car and just did not sound right or feel right, popped hood and I could see water pump pully moving back and forth, and some anti freeze on manifold.

I would say it is the water pump.

Mike.

I'm selling a High Flow Milodon water pump in the for sale section, cheap. It only has a few thousand miles on it. I needed to convert to a long neck water pump for the Procharger pulley. I can also include the stock pulley with it if you want. Send me a PM if you're interested.

You should consider enkeivette's offer if you have that much play in your water pump.
I'm pretty sure that you want between 0.010 at the low end and 0.060 play where the distributor shaft goes up and down at the gear end.

I replaced my water pump last summer. My w.p. pulley did wobble really badly when it finally failed. One can also use a long piece of wood (like a broom handle cut off) to listen to the bearings in there. As mentioned, just use caution not to engage any moving parts while holding it against your water pump.
