A 64 amp alternator should be fine  . Mine is low amp too, but I think there were higher rated alternators than 64 amp installed from the factory, so there shouldn't be a problem.
If you're getting an alternator from a local auto-parts store, and there was a higher stock rating for your year, you're likely going to be able to only find that one. Bottom line - no problems.
I replaced my 63amp unit with one from a late 80's Camaro. It is a 90 or 95 amp unit, a couple of years ago Chevy Hi-Performance ran an article on it. I got mine at Autozone for about $40.00, they took the old pulley and fan off my alternator and put it on the new alternator. It works great, charges my system, with plenty left over for my CD-changer, and audio amps.
An alternator's rating is it's ability to supply current. It doesn't "force" 65 amperes into the electrical system. However, if the system needs that ammount it can supply it. Therefore replacing a 42 amp with a 65 amp will not affect the system.
