Numbers apparantly match, but the dates?
When I bought my 69 L46 vette last autumn I was not really into the numbers game. At time of purchase it was not as important to me as was the overall condition of the car. Seller stated the number do match though.
Meanwhile I got curious and I wanted to share with you what I have.
In particular it makes me wonder that the engine cast date, engine build date and VIN could be all that close together?

- The block is a 3932388 cast, the cast number is C 5 9 (5th of march 1969)
- engine pad says V0317HW (I hope the 'I' can be read as a '1'?, that would be 17th of march)
- The VIN ends with 20264 (according to my book that would be one of the last cars build in March 69)
The engine VIN stamping matches to the tranny stamping.
Opinions welcome... thanks.

The closeness of the casting date on the cylinder case, the build date of the engine, and the build date of the car seem pretty typical to me.
The 350/270 in my 71 was cast on Dec 31 1970, built on Jan. 7 1971, and went into a car on Jan. 14, 1971.

When I realized I have one of those 388 "mystical" blocks I thought it is time to check this out.

The block had to be cast before it could be machined.
After it was cast, it was machined and assembled (3/17).
It was then shipped to St. Louis and was at the plant before your car was assembled in April.
