Default tie rod configuration question

Fellow Shark Owners (also posted in Factory Correct Resto):

How is the tie-rod installed on the car? Is the left-handed thread side installed in a certain way? Or is it all *****-nilly?

I checked the GM service manual, Chiltons, AIM, Haynes, and nothing gave me a clue. Does the left-hand thread side point to the right-side of the car - on both sides?

Your careful consideration and thoughtful input is certainly appreciated.

Thanks, GM

Thanks Paul, but I have a similar picture in my shop manual, and it does not say which side the left-hand thread points. If there's detail in your picture with this info, please advise.

At this site under "Suspension and Steering" you will find a useful description. It was written by Jim Shea, a member of this Forum.

Left hand thread is the outer tie rod.

I just went through this myself :)

It really doesn't matter as long as you do it the same on both sides. Correct is counterclockwise (left hand thread) on the outer, right hand thread (traditional clockwise) is on the inner tie rod.

Good luck :)

I suppose I'm already stirring it up, but I get one post that says the left-hand thread is the outer, then I get a link to a picture that appears to be from the AIM that shows the left-hand threads are the inner.

Ugh! What's a numbers-chaser to do?

I think I'll go with the printed diagram, unless someone has conflicting written documentation.

This is from corvettefaq.com

Depending which way you mix and match the tie rods you will have either of the following conditions; either they will both extend or retract together if you turn the adjuster tubes the same direction. Or one side will extend and the other will retract if you turn the adjuster tubes in the same direction (this is the way that they should be installed to the relay rod, See Fig #1.)

Don't forget, since the tie rod ends are identical (except for the RH or LH thread), the relay rod attach points and the steering arms on the knuckles won't care which ones assemble where.

I was told to keep them the same direction, but from reading this, it seems that maybe I should have reversed them. The advice I received was from a bunch of people that have done this a few times. I guess that if I am not into keeping it all original, it doesn't matter as long as it can be aligned.
