Default Borgeson Gear Box

I have been thinking about installing a Borgeson gear box and have a question for those who have. Do you install a steering shock absorber? I have stock P\S now and don't know if I would have to buy one?

Also in one of the other threads somebody had a u-joint instead of a rag joint but all I can find is the rag joint..

Keep on vetting!

For a Borgeson style recirc ball box, all I have ever seen is a rag joint from the factories.....but in case of a rack, it's been U joints....

when doing MY rack install 8 years ago, I used a rag in between 2 U joints...not knowing WHAT to do, but it's still working...so I leave well enough alone....

Just remember one thing, to loosen the bottom two column flange bolts to allow the column to move to a more center on position with the new box....if the angle is off a hair, it's not so bad...but those centers need be the same spot laterally and vertically....

Borgeson has U joints that will work and I'm sure they will sell you one. ...but they will advise you to use the rag joint for street use, which is what I did and am quite pleased. Flaming River has a variety of u joints as well.

Borgeson makes really nice u-joints and even make some with urethane in them as vibration reducers. They've got steel and stainless steel versions for show.

I used a u-joint due to the #7 header tube was just too high on the Hooker 2-1/8" headers combined with the .600" raised port heads to clear the factory style rag joint.

You don't need any shock absorber. Just install the box and go.

No absorber necessary for this set-up
Call Borgeson and ask about which u-joint to use for your application

The Borgeson number for their stainless u-joint is 114350. It can be ordered from Summit for approx $90. Using the u-joint means that you will have to collapse the steering approx another inch.

Thanks everybody for all the help! I will save money not getting the absorber, and will go with the rag joint. Thanks again!

I just did the conversion a few weeks ago. I can't believe I wanted 20 years before I put PS on my vette. SOOOOO much easer to drive. You remove the shock absorber. I used the rag joint , but I will be changing to the u joint. I don't like how close the headers are to the joint, I have maybe 1/4".
