Have the drive shaft out on my 80 vette. Would like to change the slip yoke seal on the 4 speed transmission. Anyone have any good suggestions on how to get it out without doing any damage to the spline shaft?

The tool mentioned is best/easiest but if you don't have much room to operate it, it may not be efficient. I'd use a wide blade (1/4") chisel or old screw driver. Just crush the seal in on itself by hammering towards the shaft. That will losen it enough to pop it out. Wipe the oil residue out of the tail housing with brake cleaner or equiv. and use thin bead of weathersrtip adhesive around new seal circumference and tap seal in evenly. Put a small amout of trans. oil on the yoke to lubricate the seal. Not much chance of damaging the spline on the shaft unless you get carried away.
Thank you for the advise. I bought a seal removal tool from horbor freight but it is too big to get in behind the seal and pry off of the shaft. Guess I"ll try the hammer and chisel.
Pack the cavity on the back of the seal with grease before you drive it back in. That will reduce the chance of dislodging the garter spring around the inner part of the seal. Without that spring in place the seal is 90% worthless.

Thanks for the vidio link. After viewing it, I tried my seal removal tool. Hooked the inside of the seal, gave the handle a hit and the seal popped right out. Piece of cake!!!!
