Trying hard to put back the 70 vette together. Didn't expect the cam to get wiped on the rebuilt engine. Replaced the cam with a Lunati and followed their break in procedure exactly.
Also have been following the posts on flat tappet oils. I bought some ZDDP plus to add to the oil after break in. Found some Accel oil at Walmart that states for older cars and meets SF requirements. Nothing on Zinc contents and could not find anthing on the web except is was manufactured by Warren Distributing.
If the oil has the required Zinc does adding ZDDP plus create a problem - too much Zinc?
More concerned about doing damage then wasting $ on additives.
really want to drive around this year instead of staring at Vette pieces in the garage
i got my 68 a few months ago, came to me with engine freshly rebuilt and the break in oil still in it,so i called around to local engine rebuilders and finally found brad penn grade one high performance green oil, at about 5.oo a quart, put it in a few weeks ago,and everything is good. i wanted to stay with conventional oil,and this is as close as i could get. ive heard mixing additives can be a questionable thing, but who knows, good luck, tom
Too much ZDDP can leave combustion chamber deposits - any oil with 1200+ ZDDP is good to go per the sticky.
I would read information on the sticky regarding Brad Penn; good claims, but some inconsistent test results. Good research happening and all being posted on the sticky.
ZDDP is a pressure lubricant and really only affects the cam/lifter interface; high ZDDP here during break-in is critical.
I would suggest using an oil that states it has a sufficient quantity of ZDDP (usually racing oils state such, example Valvoline Racing) or add ZDDP to a current motor oil.
Don't over-additize, you don't want to create problems that would typically not be there.
From: Who says "Nothing is impossible" ? I've been doing nothing for years.
For engine break in it is actually a good idea not to go too high on the ZDDP as the new components have to wear into each other. This is the reason Brad Penn's break in oil contains less ZDDP than their other high performance oils
