Can the aluminum heads off of an L98 Corvette engine be used on our Gen I engines?

The L98 engine is a gen 1 motor as well.

They'll fit fine, not sure about spark plug and header/manifold clearance.

It'll raise your compression ratio quite a bit, that'll help with overall power and especially low-end torque. If you can get them for next to nothing, it's not a bad upgrade, but aftermarket heads (TF, AFR) are way better.

You'll need centerbolt valve covers, and they *might* have a different intake manifold bolt pattern as well.

L-98 heads have standard 6 bolt intake manifold. GM chnaged the center bolt angles on iron heads but aluminum stayed the same as old. 100% bolt-on.

There is a pair for $300obo. What would the compression ratio be? I have the L82 engine.

I think you'd probably see around 10:1, maybe a bit higher. It should be okay with the stock cam, but make sure to run 91 octane fuel and keep an ear out for ping.

Be sure to have a machine shop pressure test them before you put them on. As an added bonus you'll be taking 40 lbs off the front of your car.

stock L82 w/ L98-ZZ4 heads & 0.028" (5.8cc) gm 10105117 hgask =
= about 0.053" quench at about 10.7:1 scr ...
... L98-ZZ4 heads need either guideplates OR rail rockers & they don't have exhaust Xover & ex ports are about 0.100" higher than stock L82.

I have been running those heads for years with a LT-1 intake. Hooker Super-Comp headers clear the plugs. I had to cut down a spark plug socket to fit the tight quarters, but otherwise no clearance issues.

If budgetis your game these are a pretty good choice and you will get a decent amount of low end torque out of them, but I am counting the days until I go get a pair of aftermarkets that flow better. They are a little too tame for me.

Thanks!!! The surprising thing was when I removed the C4 crossed flags emblem, the depressed area on the valve cover fit the C3 emblem exactly. I thought that was pretty of the General.

Watch out for the early aluminum castings, feb 1986 is when the l98 first got the alum head. Those early ones are known for cracking. They are fixable if you can weld aluminum, but kind of a pain the the rear. I out them on a 23 T bucket I built and had them on my 86 vette too. Both sets had cracks when I first went through them.

We ported them and ran them on the flow bench and got some pretty impressive numbers. Cheap head these days but can make some nice streetable power.
