Default L88 hood

Hello, I am about to be having the paint and interior redone on my newly acquired 71 coupe. The car is a BB car and came with an l88 style hood. The hood has been cut up underneath and is badly mishapen, so I would like to replace it. I would also like to use the "longer" style L88 that eliminates the wiper doors. I want to have the L88 style airfilter that fits into the L88 hood airbox. That being said, could anyone provide me with a short list of what all I need for the proper set-up? Ecklers has listed the hoods, a "fresh air hood chamber" and multiple pieces for the L88 air filter system. I just don't want to buy too many or not enough pieces to complete the conversion. Thank you all very much in advance for any help. Thanks!

Based on your info it looks like you don't have any parts currently that would be usable for the new hood set up- is that correct? If so, you should get the hood with the airbox already attached, the filter base that attaches to the carb, the small screened filter assembly that attaches at the top of the carb, the filter element that goes into the chamber of the hood, and that should about do it. I hope that helps. Ecklers should have a diagram in their catalog that shows how these parts go together.

Sounds like the Hood you have now was cut and a L-88 style scoop bonded in. So I assume you don't have an Air chamber. Ecklers and others don't seem to list the hoods with the Air Chamber installed I think due to fitting issues. Probably a good thing to as each car is a bit diffrent. So I think You will need to get both and Bond them togeather after you get everything lined up. A factory L-88 Hood comes along on e-bay about every 2 months or so. But they are short hoods with the Wiper door.

Hey guys.

68-72

Does anyone out there have photos of an aftermarket L88 hood installed WITH AIR BOX (ex.. like ACI, Ecklers etc..) in conjunction with the L88 dropped screen base/filter assembly where the filter is in the hood .. The true to form L88 design but using aftermarket parts)

I would really appreciate seeing some examples. I don't really need to see L88 open non chamber hoods and base air filters.. I'm interested in seeing true to form L88 examples that can be recreated in the aftermarket. I'm just trying to figure out if I should buy a new hood or modify my existing L88 hood.. The ACI one looks slick and has the air box.. I cannot find a single photo example of that hood with the authentic L88 dropped base and filter mounted in the hood ..

Thanks in advance for sharing 👍

This is a better shot of the parts on the carburetor or EFI system ready for hood to seal shut

This is the hood assembly being test fit as I was installing the EFI system. There you have it, an L88 Air box assembly used with the L88 Hood.

I am using a material made by K&N and sold as outer layer for air filters to remove the bigger stuff from the air. The perforated steel ring inside the air box over the carburetor opening normally wears a foam element that you oil just like a lawn mower engine. That is the "main" filter by GM for the L88 cars. My carburetor got dirty often before using the Yellow K&N Outer Wear.

In the hood picture you can see the metal screen that supports the foam element normally, I have the foam out being cleaned and oiled before re-installing it. Foam has to be treated specially because it is able to handle the heat and an occasional pop though the carburetor. If you had a back-fire it might ignite the foam and oil. When there is a backfire or even a good pop the bright flash appears at the base of your windshield coming towards you. The K&N filter keeps the butterflies and such from being ingested by the engine.

The cold air is kept separate from the engine bay and this why my Engine can use the L88's compression ratio without having 105 octane Low lead available. I keep some tetra-ethyl Lead to add to the gasoline in case it will be hot and I will need the full compression. Normally a Water/Methanol Injection system can make the octane go up to 116 and the water cools the intake down. This system is activated by temperature and load conditions so it only really works in the heat of the summer.

If you go with a new L88 hood I'd be interested in your old short one if you decide to sell.
