I'm restoring a '80 C3, and just picked up a 2004r to go in it. Originally it had a TH350.
It's my understanding that to mount up, the only different part I'll need is a crossmember for a TH400, and the 2004r will bolt right to it. Is this correct?
I just did the same conversion in a 78. All i needed to do was unbolt a bracket off of the TH350 crossmember the the 200/4R bolted right to the stock crossmember. I did have some issues with the exhaust system fitting though. Had to take it to a muffler shop that had a bender because the pan on the 200 is wider. Its a great conversion though, you will really like it, makes the car great on the e-way.
No you do not change the driveshaft length when replacing a -400 with a 200-4R.. All you change is the 200-4R yoke to TH350 yoke and the front u-joint. It then bolts right in...
I am pretty sure the driveshaft must be shortened for a TH400 to a 700R4..
So the 200R4 is the same length as the TH350? Does this mean I can drop in a 200r4 into my 78 Camaro without shortening the driveshaft? I would really like an overdrive transmission in my daily drive Z28.

I think you intended to say that you change the TH400 yoke to the TH350/TH2004r yoke.
The crossmember is different for a TH400 than for a TH350/2004r, but it might not take much to make it work.

Yep, it's a hot swap. Check out the posts over on NastyZ28.com. That swap is done all the time.
Dang, seems like for no more the 1500 bucks and very little work you could get an overdrive transmission. I would think an OD would greatly improve the drivability and the performance of our cars. Sorry darefugee to get of the subject.

1600 rpm's at 60mph....with 3.08's...low 20's mpg...close to the same TH400 ratio's in 1st, 2nd, and D... and 0.67 in 4th!
Swapping the Bowtie Overdrives 200 4R, stage 2, in place of the TH350, was one of the BEST modifications I did on the '80. Fast and firm shifts, and .67 overdrive. 2200 RPM at 70MPH.
13 year ago I did a 700 swap into my '72 350 muncie shark, had to shorten the drive shaft, went to a 200 4r as a much better suited to the car as the 336 diffy made the 700 first gear almost useless, and the 200 holds overdrive at WOT also where the 700 refused to do that....
not only that but the 200 is some 50 lbs lighter then the 700, and the pan is narrower,....
BTW, those of you that mentioned changing the yoke, did you change to a stock style yoke with u joint straps, or did you go to a snap ring type? Or does it even matter? I'm finding the snap ring type are easier to find. Doing this conversion now, thanks.
