My oil gauge is spiked to the max and stays there. If i put power to it and then ground the other post it will go to zero. When i take the ground off it goes right back to the max. Is the gauge bad?
No.. but what year is the car and I will help you?
The gauge works in the following manner.. If you have power and ground.. and no input signal.. (ohms from the sender) the gauge will peg.. If you have a grounded out wire on the input (ohms wire) then the gauge will peg to zero...

It is a 1976. And I installed a new sending unit. I put power to the gauge and ran a temporary wire from the sending unit to the gauge but nothing changed? Before this happend the gauge jumped all over place.
OKay. I Bought a new sending unit but no change. When I check the gauge with a omhs meter with the key on there is a reading and the gauge will go to zero. When I start the car the ohms meter reads like there is an open circut and the gage pegs to 80. When I turn the car off it will read ohms again. I checked the wire for the sending uint and it is good no short, so I ran a temporary wire from the sending unit and checked it with the ohms meter and it did the same thing. Read ohms with the key on and when I satrted the car it read like an open circut. So I put a mechanical oil pressure gage on the engine and it read 50psi at idle. It is a 1976.
