Default 71 Headlight Oddity Part II

A few weeks ago I posted some pics and asked why they disagreed with the AIM. ( http://forums.corvetteforum.com/zerothread?id=254899 ) I was told they didn't. I finally got around to scanning in my AIM and guess what? They don't agree.

My Part:

The AIM:

See the difference? The hole where the pivot shaft goes through (in the middle of the three bearing bolt holes on each side) is slotted out on the AIM and not in my part.

The GM service manual mentions these slots as well. A few people have told me that theirs looks like mine but I was wondering if may this was a midyear change. It makes removing just the lights module a lot more difficult.

Anyone see any harm in taking a die grinder to them and slotting them myself? Thanks guys...

Hmmm... definately a difference. Mine were the same as yours with no slot. I can't see that it would hurt anything to slot it out though. That definately would make assembly easier.
I'll ask the '71 owners about it in the next Registry update.

I can tell you for sure that my 77 Vette with 41*** VIN has a round hole, not a slot like in AIM.
I think its worth a check with my 68......

I have seen a lot of those buckets at my parts guy and all had holes! Never saw a slotted one!

Now I'm kind'a curious. I wonder if '70s has these slots. I would imgaine they looked like this at some point otherwise why would the drawing i the AIM show the slots. Maybe they changed this pre-assembly and never got around to updating the manuals?

You know a simplier option may be to cut the ends of the pivot shafts off a bit. Once the bearing are loose they would slide out execpt the shaft extends past the ends of the bearings and into the holes. Cut them off 1/8" or so and they would slide right out...
