I just went through the process of restoring mine. I had the same issues with cracks in the tub and the "V" brace was rusted.
After completing the tub repairs and sand blasting the brace, I painted both parts to match the underside of the car and rivetted them together
Hopefully the parts come in shortly to allow me to reinstall it under the car.

I powder coated the frame and shot the tub with satin black. Used stainless bolts to replace the rivets. I've got the whole thing off while working on my rebuild right now. I'm putting the new electric fuel pump, filter, and pump relay in the tub area and will eliminate carrying a spare in lieu of carrying a tire repair kit/compressor package that Slime has in that same area. Here's a pic of what will be covered soon by the refurbished carrier.
When I get the carrier back on I'll post a pic of it. It will be a couple of weeks as the tank is off getting sumped right now.

I gave my cover a spruce up about 4 years ago
(painted with VHT black wrinkle finish and hand painted crossed flags)and wouldn't you know it, 2 weeks later -It cracked
!!!!As you can see by the pic it's taken a bit of a beating since.
I'll end up re-doing it ONE DAY (soon).

Finally got to paint it over the past week end I used the black bed liner coating..it ended oup quite well...
Now it only needs the rivets and its going back to the car..after I solve the gas leak in the tank....

Has anyone converted their spare tire carrier for something else? I won't be carrying a spare anymore "tire in a can & AAA" and I could use the space. It looks perfect for tools, flares ect.
