Help... Is this seam sealer or some sort of bonding material?

The crack between the top of the fender and the bonding/sealing material gets thicker if I push the fender up and down.

Also, the outer part of the fender seems to not be bonded all the way down. Is this normal?

It looks pretty rusty in there but I don't have the skill that the rest of you have to take the front end off. Any ideas? I thought the car was in really good shape, now I am worried.

Hi g,
Although that area was VERY rough when the cars left St. Louis, I believe your hinge pillar has had a bit of work done on it since.
Here are a couple of pictures of an original hinge pillar without any additional work, and then a couple more to show you what's under the paint.
I'm not sure what your second picture shows?
Regards,
Alan

The fender should be bonded all the way around. the factory did a very good job at this. Most people who have removed their front ends have stated it took several hours to remove the front clip. In my case I had what sounds similar to your case. The front clip was off the car at one point and was not bonded on properly when reinstalled. I am not kidding when I tell you, it took me 15 minutes to remove the front clip. Also if the car was hit or involved in a front end collision, the fender could have been knocked loose and never bonded back on. Do you know any of the cars history?
The rust does not look that bad from the outside, but it is hard to tell what could really be under there. Try removing the windshield trim and the kick panels and try to look at how far or bad the rust is in these areas. When the birdcage ends up with significant rust, it compromises the structural integrity of the car.

Thanks for the replies. You're right, it definitely doesn't look original . I started to srape off as much as a could. I also puchased some Marine-Tex to try. Does anyone know if Marine-Tex will stick to POR-15?

Wish me luck
