Speedo and tach are two different animals. The speedo is mechanical, you most likely have a broken speedo cable. The tach someone else will chime in. I never had a problem with mine but I do know they sell curcuit boards and rebuild them.

Does your car have 2 cables one from the dash to a transducer for the cruise control and then another cable from the transducer to the transmission? If so the transducer has probably gone bad. Also you need to look at the cable itself inside the cable housing just because they're connected doesn't mean the cables are good.

Go to the Willcox website, they probably have a troubleshooting printout for the tach.

If the speedo works when the cable is disconnected from the trans and spun, then something is wrong with the speedo gears inside the trans. My 79 is a 4 spd, and there is a small nut that holds a small cover over the speedo gears. Just take that nut off and you'll get to the gears, and then I would check them out for damage. I assume an auto is similar, but don't know.
