I had a new 383 Stroker installed in Dec 08. She drove great for awhile then I discovered a transmission leak so I let her sit for a few months. About a month ago, I finally had the seal replaced. Last night I was coming home from a friends house. I stopped at a red light when all of a sudden she backfired, the engine died and started smoking. I heard a metal clanking sound underneath the car. Some people stopped and helped me push her into a parking lot. Then I went over to the street and found a single metal rod laying on the ground. I am not an engine guru but I know this isn't good. What is the best/ and or cheapest way to get it fixed? Do I need to buy a brand new short block? Any help or insight you can give would be greatly appreciated. I live in Cibolo Texas outside of San Antonio, so if anyone else lives around here and can recommend a good shop, I would appreciate it.
I will post some pics tomorrow. I just had her towed home to my garage this morning. After work tomorrow, I will jack her up and take some pics of both the rod and where the oil is leaking out of
If it comes out at all , it has to comes out in pieces. If it is still in one piece, which i can hardly imagine it must have come loose from both piston and crank, which is hardly something I can imagine.
I went out and jacked her up. I found a dime size hole on the oil pan near the starter where the rod came out of. How do I post the pics on here so you guys can view them?
Go to the "help forum" and look for the sticky thread on posting pics. It's easy.
I think the "for sale" section has that info as well.
A connecting rod does not come out of a dime sized hole.
Your picture shows a pushrod. That actuates the valve. How the he$$ did that come through the oil pan. That is in the valve train in the upper part of the motor. Anything is possible but that is strange for a pushrod to come out the oil pan.
I have no idea how or why it came through my oil pan but unfortunately it did. So basically my engine is shot right? What type of work would be needed to be done to fix it?

No that rod doesn't mean your engine is shot but this should be one for the record books.
It depends on what let go in the motor. If the pushrod came down through the motor yes there is something broken in the block and it would be trashed. You or have someone take the valve covers off at least to see what is happening. The best thing would be to take off the intake and see how the pushrod came down through the block.
That's a pushrod, not the feared connecting rod. You probably have a blown up lifter and maybe a damaged valve, too. You may be lucky, though, but you'll for sure have to pull the engine to tell exactly what's damaged and what isn't. Once the pushrod made it to the pan, the spinning crank hammered it through.
That pushrod looks surprisingly good after having suffered such abuse. I've never seen one come through the pan. I saw one come through the hood on my buddies 340 Duster back in the day. I had a connecting rod or what was left of it,come up and break the cam once too.

Was just thinking that which prompted coming back into this thread.

It does not even look scratched. You would think if the crank hit it that there would be signs of damage. To come down through the engine it has to get by the lifter the cam and the spinning crank and rods. Something would have dinged it up and then hitting going through the pan and hitting the ground should damage it.

I was thinking the same thing when I saw the pic of that rod, you would think it would show some kind of beating....
