Going to replace the worn out and mostly non-functional gauges in my '76. There are obviously 5 holes in the bezel. I need to figure out which 5 gauges to get. I'll definitely replace oil pressure, water temp, and fuel. I'll probably replace voltmeter, although I don't know why I need this info every time I drive. I don't think I need the clock. The question is, what do others think are the 5 best gauges to have.
Keep a volt meter or ammeter- they let you know if your charging system is working or not. I have fuel level, water temp, volts, oil pressure, and oil temp. Other gauges you might put in place of the clock could be wideband A/F ratio or vacuum (both good tuning devices).
Probably the most "necessary" gauges for a C3 are: fuel gauge, oil pressure, water temp, ammeter (it does tell you if the battery is charging or if a belt has been thrown), and a vacuum gauge. The vacuum gauge can tell you if there is a leak in the system, help you diagnose engine problems, and help you drive to best mileage (if you ever want to do that..). Another alternative gauge is a transmission oil temp gauge...if you have an auto tranny.
Chances are that the lack of function on your gauges is not the gauges themselves...more than likely electrical problems and/or sensor problems. Those same issues will have to be dealt with if you replace the gauging with new ones. Why not just fix what you have?? {Just a thought...}

Yes, I am going to put the multimeter to work this weekend on the old gauges and wiring. The faces are a little worn, though, and ultimately I will want to upgrade. I appreciate the input.
