Decided to take the EGR valve off and have a look.
From what I can tell there is alot of carbon on the EGR shaft and up inside the valve ports......lots of black charcoal looking stuff :(
I wonder if this is clogging up my EGR and not allowing it to smoothly operate
with vacuum. ??
The ports on the intake manifold have quite a bit of carbon as well.
I have to pass my emissions test today and I failed the NOX levels yesterday -
again.
When I pulled up on the EGR with the engine running the valve caused the car to stumble - which is what its supposed to do.
Question - can I soak and clean my existing EGR valve and probably fix it?
Im tempted to order a new one from NAPA ( $67 AC Delco )and get it in a couple hours...
I have to pass today.
How do I clean out the intake manifold ports??
The dont look clogged up - just lots of carbon buildup...
Re: EGR inspection - quick help please ... (ksems)
If you are failing the test at idle, then the problem is something other than the EGR. The EGR is not open at idle, and you have verified that it is closed by the "raising up" test.

Yes, the EGR ports should be crusty looking. You haven't said what you're car is failing on. If it is hydro-carbons then your problem is probably coming from running rich. If it is something else then check your cat, it has probably croaked and isn't doing anything but plugging your exhaust off. If you need to pass, then take it to a shop that has the same type of sniffing equipment that the inspection places use. Try and lean the car out, and see what happens.

smokehouse - Im failing NOX level
While cleaning my intake port ( scraping with a screw driver )
I am pulling out the consistentcy of tar on my screwdriver....its gummy and black...
Re: EGR inspection - quick help please ... (ksems)
it should not be sticky - if you have gummy deposits in your EGR passages it would point me to your Computer controlled Carb. NOx is formed by excessively high temperatures in the combustion chamber. HC is the result of unburned fuel.
Get a new Cat on there - Walker makes some nice high flow units - sure they arent the equal of a Random Tech Cat but they are better than any original. - How modified is your engine?
Is your test the 2 speed test - idle and 1500 rpm or just 1500 rpm?
Re: EGR inspection - quick help please ... (ksems)
I read on your other post that timing was OK. Since everything else you described sounds OK, including the crusty EGR, time to rebuild the carb.. Running lean on the primaries. Oh yeah, check your fuel filter(s) too.
