Default How long can a mech pump be run empty?

How long can a mechanical pump survive if the car is run with an electric pump and the mechanical pump with the hoses disconnected ?

My pump was all over the place, pushing way too much pressure into the carb. it would have peaks of 15 or more psi and valleys of what looked to be 0.

Switched temporarily to a Mr gasket electric pump and i have 5 psi steady into the carb...

what are the ill effects i ll get from running the mechanical pump without gas in it ? will it cease?

Also seems that the gas gets heated pretty good with the electric and mechanical pump and can see air pockets in the glass filter.

My headers are close enough to the metal fuel lines that radiant heat is considerable and heats the gas. Should I worry about this ?
I don`t think this has caused any problems on fuel delivery.

Thanks !

Don't know how long it would last. Any time I switched to electric I pulled the manual off and the pushrod out and put a cover plate on with gasket. Looks better IMO.

That's what I would do, too.

About your problem of radiant heat, you can use ThemoTec products to insulate your fuel pipes :

It's not very expensive but it is very efficient. Here is what I did with my braided hose and fuel lines :

If it's not vapor locking it should be fine as is, but you could also attach a wooden clothespin(s) to the fuel line for a little more peace of mind...just remember to take it off at car shows...I forget quite a bit to do that, but makes for conversation though.

Get rid of the glass filter also.

Wood is actually a pretty good insulating material and if anything is trapping the heat in the fuel line, not helping get rid of it.

GM came up with an excellent solution for vapour lock and incorporated it on all later C3s. It amazes me to see how many people defeat this system.

Three ports pumps/bypass lines are your friend.

Glass has a bad habit of cracking/shattering at which point you're pumping gas all over your engine and exhaust. Many a cars have been turned into cinders that way.
