Default 200r4 crossmember modification?

80 vette, converting TH350 to 200r4. I have installed the transmission but need to cut up my crossmember to make it work.

Who has modified their stock crossmember to accept the 200r4? Have any pictures? I don't want to spend $200 for a bowtie crossmember when I have a crossmember to chop up.

Should not have to cut anything, just maybe elongate the rear two mount bolts in the center of the cross support....

for my muncie, there was a 'shoe-bracket that bolted to the top center of the support, and then to two tabs on the bottom front....take that off, and the 200 sets on the cross support directly....

No holes on top of my crossmember. It had a small plate that was welded on and it dropped down a few inches so the TH350 would mount. I cut the plate off and smoothed the top of the crossmember. The crossmember wont bolt to the frame because the transmission wont allow it...

Yep, you MUST modify or change your cross memeber, here's what I did...my car's an 81, but it's the same as your 80...

Here's how it started:

Here's the first mod:

And the final version. I used a piece of U channel, and ended up turning it over (from the initial mod) and cutting out the forward "wall" to get the trans to sit level with the frame of the car.

Hope this helps!!

Thanks for the posting. I had a similar idea to yours but seeing it in the pictures is perfect. Thank you for posting the pics!

Damn, Dave, you really had to go hog wild with yours....far more than I did, strange, being as you had a 350 thm on there in the first place...that welded on shoe/support was a bolt on in my car....

I did extensive modify my cross support in another way, as you saw,but it had nothing to do about the 200 install, but simplified the exhaust routing a LOT,....

Yeah, the 72 and 80-81 have really different cross memebers, so if you need to change the trans mount position, there's not too many options. Not only is the trans mount different, but there aren't any holes for exhaust, so we have to be creative there too!!
