How is the electric choke wired? I got the kit to convert the hot air choke to electric, and there are no instructions or anything that say how to wire it. Is it just connected to the ignition switch so that it is hot whenever the key is in the run position, or is it connected to the alternator somehow so that it will only be hot when the engine is running or what?
Ok, I would assume, you mean it is hooked up to the brown wire on the alternator (terminal 1). And this would provide for the electric choke to be operating whenever the engine is producing a charge.
I recommend putting a T in your oil sender line and putting in a oil pressure switch so it is only energized with the engine running. Otherwise, if you leave your key on for several seconds without starting the engine, it will start to close the choke. Run the wire from the choke to one terminal of the switch, and from the other terminal to the ignition switch, or the battery, or wherever since it only energized the choke when the engine is running anyway. This is also a good way to wire electric fans that you want on "all the time". Then they don't run when the engine is off.
I have one on my car and would recommend running a wire from the choke through the firewall and connect to one of the extra "Accessories" terminals at the fuse block. They're only hot when the key is turned ON and the current for the choke isn't bothering any other circuit.
I like to run the hot wire thru a oil pressure sensor. I think I used one for a mid 70's Pontiac that had three blades on it. I can get you the part number if you want it. Like the previous poster said, this way you don't have the choke warming up unless the engine is actually running.
