Default side pipe questions for 79

Looking to order two sets of hooker headers and side pipes today one for my driver 79 and one for the new project 81. How loud are they without any muffler or stuffing at all? i know the options, baffles, glass pack or open. I think I want them open, but don't want to scare the neighbors dogs everytime I start the cars either. One has a stock 350 and the other will have a pretty cammy heavy breathing 377 in it. Any observations? On a scale of one to ten what will be the difference in noise. I drive the 79 regularly on the interstate and around town. thanks snakeater

without anything in the side pipes you will drive the car once and then immediately decide what kind of muffler/baffle you want to put in them or invest in a good pair of ear muffs. There are lots of threads on this site concerning what muffler/baffle to use, I have the STS.

I have the Sweet Thunder 2-1/2" inserts. I love the sound. Open was too loud for me and glass packs weren't the sound I wanted either.

Forget the open pipes, you'll go deaf in 5 minutes. I have the STS baffles in mine and you can still talk at highway speed but will bark when you get on it. The Hooker Max Flo's are one step quieter than open pipes but sound really bad a$$. Had them in mine for one day and they hurt my ears. If you do a search, I think a couple guys had sound bites of the different mufflers.

thanks gentlemen that's what I needed to know. i already ordered the headers and pipes, but i will hunt around tomorrow for the inserts. The"hotrod" vette I may leave open for now, as it needs to be obnoxious. If it is just unbearable i will stuff an insert in there too.

It will be very loud (think open headers loud) without any type of muffler. There is a guy that has run autocrosses around my parts with a 71 with open pipes. It is very loud.

I used to run my 73 with open hooker headers when at a track or any autocross where open exhaust was allowed. Of course the only mufflers i had were the reverse flows and they are very, very restrictive. Now i have a set of pipes that have an insert in them that i dont' know who made it. My dad bought the pipes at a swap meet and the inserts were in them already. The insert is basically a 1.25" tube that runs down the middle and is louvered. THen it has about 4 disks spaced out along the lenght to force air through the louveres. It sounds really good to me.
