Whats the optimal stock zz4 shift points on a 3 spd and what should my timing be set at, going to track wed. and want to get this set tommorrow so itll be ready...thanks
Shift points will be determined by your horsepower peak and the RPM drop from gear to gear. Can't tell you without seeing a dyno chart since I don't know much about the ZZ4's.
Timing depends on other variables, but about 32-34 total mechanical (with vac hose off of distributor and hose plugged) and timing should be all in by at least 2500. The best way to check it is to get an adjustable timing light and set it at 32. Have someone sit in the car and rev it up to 2500. Watch to see if total timing comes in by that point (timing mark will be aligned with zero). If not, then rev it up slowly until total timing comes in. Obviously, you may have to check it at 34 and 36, but you should know if it's right if you set it at 32 because you will see the timing mark staying stable, just not at zero. One other thing to check, would be to give it a quick rev up to 5 or so, to make sure the timing is limited and not coming in more than you want.
Granted, this procedure is to make sure your distributor is set up for optimum performance. If it is not, I don't know if you could set it up before going to the track tomorrow, unless you have some free time.
Or you could just go with 74Vette's advice since he has a ZZ4.
The total advance on a zz4 i believe is at 32, maybe 34. it sure wont hurt to check it though. The initial advance might make a big difference if you are launching low in the RPMs. The HP peak is at 5250 on a zz4, but always shifted at the 5800 red line and ran a best of 13.3 @106 with the stock zz4.
