Default Cruise control 1980

When I press the engage button, going aove 35mph, I feel the gas pedal react for only a second as if the cruise is on. At that point the speed of the car falls off because it is not working. I pulled the wire on the unit located under the left front fender and put a test light in the connection for engage. When I push the buttonall the way in with the key on, parked in the driveway, the light comes on dim. If I press the button not quite as far down I get a bright light on the test light. Naturally I tried to duplicate this part-press while on the highway and that's when I get that quick on/off of the cruise. Any ideas/help would be greatly appreciatted. It's a 1980, all stock, no air pump anymore but I have kept all my vaccum hoses in tact and should be okay.

Its been a long time since I delt with the Cruise on my 80'. If I remember right there is a ajustment that can be made on the Vacume Can as to how abrupt it engages. Maybe just a tweek here will wake it up. Once fixed you can change out the Turn Signal Cruise stalk with a 81-82 and you will have resume like the newer cars.

You need to measure the vacuum available at the control head. I suspect weak vacuum or a vacuum leak so that there is not enough left to properly engage the unit. You might also have some bad electrical connections that don't allow enough current to flow to the control solenoid.

v8vega:

I've scanned in the cruise control section of the service manual and the cruise control electrical schematic for my 78. Should be the same for your 80. Send me a PM with your email address and their yours.
