Default Dynamat vs factory floor coating?

Hi,
I want to install dynamat in my '73. There is already a factory applied coating to the floor and tunnel. I have begun knocking the loose stuff off with a wire wheel mounted in a drill. Overall the factory stuff is still stuck on pretty good.

Here's the question:
Should I be trying to completely remove the factory coating before applying Dynamat? If not, what should I use to make sure the surface is oil free so the Dynamat will stick?

Thanks!

John

One of the reasons I used a product called Hushmat was because the mfgr states it will stick to any surface. I have been unable to prove them wrong.

Their claim to also provide a thermal barrier was another prime reason to choose it over the benefits of Dynamat. It is not cheap but certain parts of my setup were not ignored for future use. This was a key area for me.

I didn't have as much factory insulation on mine. Removed big, loose chunks and made no further attempt to clean the remainder. Bubba was typically liberal in his attempt to gorilla-snot the carpet to the floor when laid last (looked like 3M yellow adhesive). I did use a hot, soapy water solution after vacuuming loose debris to remove as much motor oil as possible (Bubba again and leaking OP gauge "painted" the entire forward tunnel). Tunnel still had a slight oily film even after drying and applied Hushmat with no problems. Worked great, even when inverted.

Another option is being offered by a forum member and his pre-cut solution is priced very competitive. A search will find him fairly quick. Just a thought.

I used two layers of "Fat Mat" for the interior and inside the doors of my 69. Works great and sticks really well (when new). Be sure to use DX330 or some lacquer thinner to clean up any oily areas before trying to apply.

Another little trick I use is to heat up the front and/or back with a propane torch whcih makes the glue a little gooey. Holy crap does it stick well !!!
