R12 is expensive,suck that stuff into a can and drop off at an AC shop and fill your system with 134. Walmart has a kit and the 134 , cost you around $50.
Changing your system over to use R134a is not as simple as replacing the refrigerant. And you can't get all that stuff done by 'this weekend'.
Start calling around to Auto A/C repair shops in your area and ask them if they have any R12 they can add to your system. Some of the shops still have a supply of R12 that they can ADD to auto systems. It won't be cheap...but it will be less expensive than changing over your system. {And it will be a lot quicker to get done.}

Actually it is. It is not actually the correct way to do it but what do you have to lose if it works ? Changing it over by the rules means the entire system has to be taken apart , all the rubber o-rings and lines have to be replaced along with many other things.
I've done many with the Walmart style kit and they all still work,so to each his own.
Call NAPA and ask for FREEZE-12 they usually stock it ..at least around here...
it is a direct subsitute for R12 and is compatable with your system & ozone friendly. just a little higher than 134 but way cheaper than R12....but you got to know someone with the R12 charging hoses ....or have your own

I do this all the time in my shops for customers who can not afford or the car is not realy worth a correct retro-fit service. Works fine most of the time.
any home AC service has R12.....probably the same service that services your home could recharge your car. But its not going to last if the cars unit it not correctly repaired.....The alternative is 134 with the correct fittings to change it over...we have found its not quite as cool by a few degrees as R12 though....but it does work
Most of the home service a/c guys around here don't have r12 since most residentioal uses r22 and the newer 410a. But then there are a gazillion a/c companies around here too.
Refrigeration service, as in grocery store and restaurant coolers, still largely use r12 and perhaps one of those places can give you a name of a local service guy with r12.
Probably up north with less service outfits, the a/c guys tend to spread themselves a little wider.
