Default Carb Question

I just bought a 71 coupe, and found it has a 74 rodchester quadrajet carb, what is the difference and should i be looking for a 71 for sale? Difference in performance, etc? Thanks!

Kinda depends on how original the rest of the car is. If it is a number matching (or numbers born) car - then it is worth looking for a '71.

If it's not, and the carb. works then leave it alone.

Just my 2c,

Jeremy.

Default 71 carb

Is your 71 a 4spd or automatic? Carb for 4 spd you'll need is a p/n 7041213,carb if auto is p/n 7041212.
Then of course the build date of your vette will come into play when trying to find a carb with a pre build date code of when your car was built.
Just went through the same process on my 71 vette with great results.I found the carb I needed with the correct date code at a great price.Happy hunting.

Sorry, I have to buy some first before dyeing! I just calculated my build date....July 10, 1971. Let me know if anyone has an appropriate carb for a fair price! Thanks!

Dusty

P.S.
Is there a difference between 71 Dark Saddle Interior(code 417) and 73(Code 415) saddle?

How are you calculating the build date, as I believe mine was also early july "20763", and I am also looking for a 7041212 carb...

Do ALL q-jets have the date code? I happened across a 'stock' Q-jet 7040202 for my '70 that doesn't have a date code.

The build date was calculated using a website I found with the numbers and cooresponding build dates. Good luck trying to find a 7041212, the carb is the only major part I need to finish my car. There are a couple of 7041213 on ebay, but they want $800! Anyone got one, decent priced, out there????? Give me a couple of hours and I'll post the website for the numbers and build dates.

The difference between a 1971 carb and a 1974 carb (if from similar engine/tranny powertrains) is minimal. There is no difference in capabilities between the two. The performance depends only upon the rods/jets and carb adjustments made to the unit. Unless you have lots of $$$$ or get really lucky to find the correct P/N carb, or a body stamped with the correct number, you shouldn't bother to look for it.

Umm, according to the website, there were 21801 built, but the last one for july list it as
21901, 100 more than was built. either the production count is off, or the last 100, are for the first 100 of 1972s.

if this is what you are trying to do, then do not go by the build date of the car, go by the assemble date of the engine, which is stamped on your right front engine pad. your carb must be built and cast before the engine is assembled by at worst a couple of months. I would challenge any originality claim by any seller of a car with a carb build date at or near the vehicle assembly date and after the engine assembly date.

but again, you would be paying hundreds for a number stamped on a bowl for no appreciable improvement in performance...
