Default 68 will not run when hot

Hello,

I have a 68, 427 automatic that I started having some problems with yesterday. After sitting all winter, I took the car out yesterday and once it reached operating temp and I was pulling into the gas station, it shut-down. I had replaced the gas tank over the winter, so the tank did not have much gas and I thought I might have run out of gas.

After it cooled down a bit, it started up and was running ok. Not good, but ok. Once up to operating temp again, it shut down - like it was out of gas. I limped it back home, going for awhile - maybe 4-5 miles - then sitting by the side of the road while it cooled down. The car is not overheating

It acts like it is not getting gas while it is hot. While trying to start it and pumping the gas, I am not getting a gas smell around the carb. The car is original, so I would not be surprised if it has the original fuel pump. I figure on changing the fuel pump and filter, but thought I would see if anybody else had run across a similar problem in case I have another issue. Could it be vapor locking or air in the gas lines from changing the gas tank? The car started up just fine yesterday - it had not been started since sometime in early April. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you,

Rob

My guess is vapor lock and/or water in your fuel. When you let your car sit with little fuel in the tank condensation can occur. There are products you can add to your gas to get rid of the water & I'd try that first. You may also want to make sure your fuel filter is still good.

Yep....vapor lock.... Tis the season...

You have the insulator style carb gasket on under the carb? What is the fuel line arrangement? Heat cross over in the intake still active?

if the fuel systems checks doesn't solve your problem look at your coil as that's a syptom of a bad coil.

Default 68 will not run when hot

Thanks guys,

I thought about vapor lock, but it was less than 80 degrees and I had not had vapor lock issues in the past with this car.

I had a new fuel filter and replaced it today. I also moved the fuel lines a little farther away from the heat sources (as best as I could considering how little room there is) while putting the new filter on. I know its not water because I put the new tank in late this winter and put in fresh gas once I was done - but only a couple gallons.

I did not get a chance to drive it today, but I will try again next weekend. Seems to be running just fine, but we will see when it gets hot. Thanks for the advice, I appreciate the help.
