Default Thread Size - Front Spindle 1968

Hi!

Two questions please?

1) What is the thread size of the front spindle nut on a 63-68?

Secondly... what is the thread size of the Spindle Dust Sheild Upper Mount Bolts? I ordered 2 new bolts.. but the threads in the blind hole are a little bungfe up and I want to chase them with a tap.

1) My Corvette parts book tells me that the front spindle nut for 53-68 is a 3/4"-20.

2) I'm not sure what you mean by "Spindle dust shield upper mount bolts", but if your referring to the bolts that go through the brake backing plates, through the caliper support and into the steering knuckle, they are a 7/16"-20 x 2 1/4" grade 8.

Hi gb & W,
Isn't there also a single larger diameter bolt at the top that threads into a blind hole in the spindle casting? I know it's there but I can't find the size or thread.
Regards,
Alan

Yes Alan... that's the one I seek.

And I'm surprised it's 3/4 20 on the front spindle, that's the same as the rear spindle isn't it?

Clams,
Is this the one your talking about?

I can take it to the hardware store tomorrow and find out exactly what size it is if you'd like?

Do you need me to take it to the hardware store to match it to a correct nut? I have to go into town anyways, so it's no problem.

If you could please. I won't get near a town for a few days.

Yep, the front spindle and the rear spindle use the same castle nut. They're found in the Corvette parts book in Group 6.022 and carried part number 378137 (now discontinued). The 69-82 front spindle uses a 27/32"-20 nut.

According to my Corvette parts book, the bolt in dzrick's picture looks to be an 11/16"-16 x 7/8". It's found in Group 5.002 and was part number 3864119. I don't know if it is still available from GM, but I doubt it.

2 hardware store, NAPA, and then finally my local Chevy dealer no one could say for sure what size this thing is. I've got to believe gbvette62's is correct.

Not that I doubted gbvette62, just tried to follow through with my promise to check.

Now that I'm home..
Does anyone know the torque value for that 11/16-16 bolt?
How about the other 2 bolt/nuts that hold that assembly together?
They are not in the AIM.

My 70 service manual lists two specs which I believe are those bolts.

Caliper housing bolt @ 130 ft. lbs. (from brake section, may be referring to rear brakes)

Brake anchor bolt - disk brakes @ 120 ft. lbs. (from front suspension section - pretty sure this is the one you need)

The brake caliper is listed @ 70 ft.lbs.

I think the spindle, dust shield & rotor were supplied as an assembly.

Hope this helps.

Jim
