I just dropped the frame from my 73 Coupe and need some options on stripping/painting the frame and stripping the body. The car is from AZ so the frame only has surface rust. Should I just POR-15 and paint it, strip it, or what? How about the body? The reason I ask is because I called some soda-blaster companies who said that if I did it myself that the light duty blasters they sell at Harbor Freight, etc. would take me way too long. Some thoughts/options????
Hi m,
I stripped my 71's frame by hand and had it powder coated. I think the results look good.
You could save the labor and have it blasted and then powder coated.

Alan

Since I posted, I decided to keep it simple and inexpensive. I ordered POR 15 Marine Grade Cleaner/degreaser, Metal Prep and Rust Preventative. I went over budget and can't afford the powder coat route. Besides, it's going to be a driver but I wanted to clean up the frame for the VBP PerfPlus suspension and Rack & Pinion Steering. I just couldn't put those new parts on a dirty frame. Check out my blog at the url in my first post.

Don't soda blast it yourself, the guy is an idiot for telling you that, you have to have the proper equipment, media and a good knowledge of how to use a blaster. You'll end up with a nightmare using one of those cheap blasters. I just stripped mine with a razor blade and a heat gun, it's allot of work but the paint came off failly easily and what's left was removed with a DA sander.
You can always paint it yourself, but think about dipping it to strip it. Find a dipping place
it will remove the rust inside and out and in every little cranny, which manual stripping wil not do. get you one of the long wands so you can paint on the inside too as much as possible.
if you are just prettying it up for a daily driver then just sand it and paint it with por-15
Dip it, That's what I did with my 73 frame. It gets the rust out both inside and out. I used a wand from 3M to paint the inside. Look up my write up on it. I had to modify it.
Even dipping it does not get rid of all the rust. I still had some between the lap joints. The rust was loosened up and I could poke it out.
I don't think there is any other way of cleaning up the inside of the frame. It rusts on the inside just as bad as the outside.
