Default Decipher 1976 Vette Engine Codes

Could someone please decipher the following 1976 Corvette engine suffixes?

CLM, CLR, CLS, CHC, CHR, CKC, CKW, CKX

My 1984 edition of the Corvette Black Book doesn't break them down.

Thanx,

Jim Shea

Thanx,

Just what I needed. I am sending an eMail to Corvette Fever correcting their May 2002 issue which has an article under SHARKbites on 1976 4-speed Vettes. Both the L48 and the L82 were available with 4-speed manual transmissions.

Jim,
Before you get that out, were they talking about the close-ratio M21 and the L82. Per the Corvette Black Book, the M21 required the L82. Thus the M21 was not available with the L48.

You could get both engines with the wide-ratio 4-speed but only the L82 with the close-ratio M21.

Yes, I just read that too. I think Sal Carbone meant to say "M-21 was required with L-82". The reader that wrote in however, said his car had an L-48 in it. Showed it in his VIN too. Then Sal went onto say, "Since your car has an L-48 in it, it had to have come with an automatic." Made it sound like there were no L-48 4spd(M-20) cars built in '76.

Thanks for the clarification on the close ratio versus wide ratio. I had already sent off the eMail to CF. It will be interesting to get an answer from them.

Now, I need to clarify some issues in their article about "rag joint R&R".

It concerns me that they are prying on the lower end of the steering column in order to get clearance to remove the flexible coupling. I think that they are actually collapsing the steering shaft back into the steering column. It is not a safety issue but a collapsed steering shaft can start to have lash over time.

The shaft is actually two pieces. They are flatted where they come together inside the column. The area where they are flatted and engaged with each other is actually injected with molten plastic at the factory to "lock" them together under normal driving. However, under a severe front end collision, the plastic shears and the two shafts telescope onto each other. It is that plastic injected joint that is being sheared when the lower end of the column is compressed.

Also they make no mention of checking to be sure that the stop pins are central in the column flange slots. The plastic spacers are on the replacement flexible coupling to help align everything as you are assembling the steering column to the steering gear. You are supposed to pull the spacers and throw them away after you button everything up. (You can grip the spacers with a hook (like a coat hanger) and pull them straight off.)
