Default AC Compressor Purchase

Where can I get a reasonably price AC Compressor for my 77?

I started out needing to replace my water pump. Done... Replaced all the belts... now the adjustment screw on the AC compressor is stripped. In looking into it its actualy the threads on the Compressor that doesn't work. So, I now have decided to get a new compressor and get the AC working.

Your help is appreciated.

You could drill and tap the hole with new threads the next size up.

Otherwise if you really want to spend money on things that are already working O'Reilly's has a pretty good price on compressors.

You could also pick up a helicoil kit in the same size as the original threads that are stripped and make it as good as new. Only a few bucks for a kit. A lot cheaper than a new compressor. Also, the new helicoil threads are stronger than the originals!

Rockauto.com-I just bought a complete AC system for my 82. There prices are fantastic and they have AC/Delco parts.

I've seen a few instances of people using a longer 3/8" bolt and nut THROUGH the compressor instead of the larger tapped bolt.

I believe you can still get the compressor new from GM. I bought a new compressor kit (new compressor, accumulator, orifice tube) last year on Ebay from "goldautoparts" for a '97 Blazer, he had a huge selection and I was very happy with the kit. You should definitely replace all 3 parts to do the job right.

I rebuilt the A/C in my '79 this year which included a new (not rebuilt) compressor. I found out during the installation that the car had SAE fasteners and the "new" compressor used metric fasteners and threaded holes. That could be why the threads are stripped.

Because the bolts were metric the slot in the mounting bracket for adjusting belt tension was smaller than the diameter of the mounting bolt. I ended up using the metric bolts that came with the compressor but I had to dremmel the slot in the bracket wider so the bolt would pass through it.

If the threads were stripped by trying to put an SAE bolt into a metric thread I would try the helicoil repair as previously mentioned.
