I posted this question in the general forum but think maybe it will do better here. I want to know how to tell if my 79 Vette body and engine are L-82 0r L-48. Thanks!
If the engine is original to the car, the VIN will tell you as will the valve covers.
In the VIN, if the 5th digit is a 8 then its an L 48, if its an 4 then you have the L 82.
IIRC, the L82 has finned style aluminium valve covers wheras the L48 are plain stamped steel.

In addition, on the tach of the L-82's it will say near the bottom of the tach "L-82" and the redline will be 6,000 RPM's versus 5,000-5,500 on the L-48 (can't remember the exact RPM's but it is less than 6,000 of the L-82. This identification is the easiest to do if you do not have access to the engine bay, as an FYI). Also, on my 78 L-82, only the L-82 had an AIR pump, not the L-48 but not sure for the 79's and the L-48's had a 2 1/4 inch exhaust versus 2.5 inch for the L-82. All the other mentioned identifications are correct.
