Default Major valve problems-help!

I started an earlier strand (from work) on valve adjustment for a solid lifter LT-1 motor. As I went through a series of adjustments it seemed that the valves were actually getting worse. Turns out my TPD reading is incorrect becuase the outer ring on the balancer is moving all over the place (it's 30 years old and the rubber is shot). Bottom line; my valves are way off and I can't find a baseline to start over and find TDC in #1 firing. Any help would be appreciated.

First get a new balancer before doing anything else. Then install and find nuimber 1 compression if still unsure of timing mark, should be good with a balancer that is new. Adjust valves and you are set.
