Thanks for all the input. I needed to vent. I intend to enjoy this car and get on with it. What bugs me though is that part of the fun of restoring an old car is tracking it's history. Unfortunatly the previous owner won't respond because he has something to hide. Oh well, life goes on.
Duke, he probably made a deal with the dealer that he would'nt reveal the true mileage no matter who called or was contacted by. I ran into the same situation with an OHIO dealer when he too had a 20,000 "original" mile '71 roadster(same car???). Took me about 10mins of looking to tell myself this car truely had 120,000mi, NOT 20,000. The Great State of Ohio will go back only five years, so here's the problem. If the last owner(s) have been lying about the mileage longer than that(which they PROBABLY were), the title search by Ohio BMV will show what is on your title(or what it was when HE claimed the mileage). Ohio BMV now has a " past title search" on their website, but I doubt it'll help you. You could check for the hell of it, it'd be interesting to see what it says anyways!!! I did this to my '80 and it SHOWED the previous owner before me bought my '80 in June of '94 with 68,000mi. I bought it in May of '97 with 81,000mi, so the owner put 13,000mi on it 3 years. Go to the Ohio BMV site or try this https://www01.dps.state.oh.us/atps/t...tid=7600755353
if this link does'nt work, follow it from the Ohio BMV say through Yahoo or other search engine.
OK, the link now works, however you'll see my '80 info, but I have nothing to hide:lol: Put in your 10 digit title number and hit go. The first two digits is the county number of the county in Ohio it came from-76 is Stark Co, mine!!! It will be 01 through 88. Then the eight digits that follow is the title number
of that particular county-Good luck!!!
Re: Odometer fraud-what would you do? (Paul Borowski)
I have to agree with drives61, time spent in a garage is a lot different than outside. My '77 is all original and doesn't have one spot of rust ANYWHERE on the car (frame included). But, the '77 my friend just bought had been left outside, and has lots of frame rust, including one 4 inch long hole in the frame . So really a lot depends on how well the car was shieded from the elements that makes the mileage believeable or not. Just my .02 cents.
