Default 1968 center console unique?

Hi,

Today I came to the park brake console on my poor 427 68 conv. which I try to restore to 68 specs. I'm a bit consfused regarding the center console - the console I have in front of me does not have the two small "compartments" on each side - this is a unique 1968 thing right? Did they skip these 69 and forward? I'm susipicous also to what I have, the panel looks carved on the edged towards the floor, and the metal bracket on the underside also looks worked on with a hacksaw or something with poor fitment. Also, the approx. 1" wide opening for the handle travel opens up much more in the front edge, making the sliding plastic cover de-rail easily and jamming the handle. Is this thing supposed to slide in under the shift console under the small clipped on (to the shift console) trim part?

Thanks.

Martin

Yes, it should have the two pockets for the seat belt latches. I'm also assuming we're talking about a used part? It sounds like you should keep looking for a correct part. The e-brake slot should be pretty much the same width all the way up, and have a chrome lip around the inside of the opening. The e brake console will rest on top of the shifter console with the small color matched spacer mounting under the e brake console and flush with the bottom of the console. I have no idea what might have been done to the console support.
