Default Now what can it be?????

I narrowed my ticking noise down to the #8 cylinder. I could tighten the rocker on exhaust side a 1/2 turn and it would stop ticking for 2 seconds then come back. It will do that everytime I tighten it. So I swapped the valve spring, rocker arm, nut from the intake side to exhaust side and it still does it, but now I noticed that both the exhaust and intake will stop the ticking for 2 seconds if either one are tightened a 1/2 turn, but will come back again. So now what can it be??? The cam and lifters are brand new and it is doing it just on that cylinder.

Both rocker studs are tight. Is it possible to get two bad lifters out of the box and happen to put both on the same cylinder? This is driving me crazy!!!!

Are these stock pressed in studs? Just for fun....look real close at the heights of them...maybe lay a straghtedge on the top and compare to the others.

Stock rockers or did you move to 1.6's?

Guideplates or just factory slots?

Stock cam or hot rod stuff?

Any nicks or wear spots on studs that could be catching on the rocker *****?

They are screw-in studs. Both studs look the same as the rest (same height) I don't know what ratio the rockers are, they were on there when I bought it, but they look to be the Summit brand roller-tip rockers. Mild cam from Summit (SUM-K1103), removed the Comp cam that was in it because it was too big. I have some rocker *****, nuts and valve springs (stock) from another head that I will try installing tomorrow and see if anything changes. If not, I can rule out the springs.

I have seen cracked rocker arms do this. They were cracked around the slot, so you have to look close at them to see the crack. You might try moving the rocker arms around to see if the noise moves with the rocker arm. Be sure and keep the ball & arm as matched sets.

Aftermarket heads or stockers with screw in studs? What I'm going for is if there is any interference/binding in the guideplates/head guide holes that could be binding things up. 1.6 rockers move pushrod closer to valve and it's possible there is something goofy going on there.

Look at bottom of rockers also to be sure they aren't touching retainers.

Pushrods aren't wearing on tips?

Is oil coming up through rocker good?

Might be a long shot.... but in my case a frustrating ticking noise on #6 turned out to be a badly worn valve guide allowing the vavle to rock in the guide.

Tightening the rocker will probably silence it for a couple of seconds until the lifter "bleeds" down to its natural level.

Good luck!
