Default 77 stock air intake

What do you think about the air intake setup in the 77's. They are some what like ram air. Is this set up worth keeping as is or would a open top element be a better alternatve. I would think it is getting somewhat cooler air thru the intake with the stock set up but it is still routed over the top of the radiator and pretty warm up there. I have the K&N fipk in my Z28 & did notice a sotp difference with that set up. I would loke something along those lines for the vette.

I am considering an open element. The stock setup gets colder air, but I think an open will get more air in. I am considering fabricating a cold air scoop from the top of the radiator support.

I just saw in the hard copy catalog of K&N a real nice setup for cold air intake but i could not find it in the web site. I think it woud be the best of both worlds.

After I added a new intake and carb, I couldn't fit the stock setup under the hood. So, I got rid of it and have no regret. I ran an open setup with a thin paper filter for a while before I finally bought a larger K&N. I like this setup a lot more and if anything have felt a gain, but definitely not a loss. One thing you could do is leave the plastic piece where the air first enters by the radiator and take off the rest. That way some cooler air can still be channeled to the open element. I don't know if it helps, but it wouldn't hurt.

The stock air system is extremely restrictive. An open element will increase flow dramatically. If you remove the plastic scoop on top of the radiator, and don't block that space with the air dam... bet you the induced air temp will be almost the same as with the stock set up scoop! Granted, the open element will be sucking warmer engine bay air, mixed with outside air, but a heck of alot more of it! The difference between cooler restricted outside vrs more flow is an easy decision in my opinion. That's what I'm gonna do!! Good Luck

If you do, look out for overheating problems.

Hi Tom:
Perhaps you can enlighten me. What would make it overheat? With the 10" scoop installed, there is no foam air dam, just a foam seal below it between the rad and rad mount. I suggested leaving all air dams/seals installed, just remove the scoop which would bring outside air in the same route...

If anyone wants to go with an open filter I have the correct diameter cover. It was among the spare parts that came with my vette.

That would create a gap that would let the cooling air bypass the radiator. That space was sealed except for the air that the engine was using. prior years that did not have that intake route had the radiator sealed up solid so that all the air had to pass through the radiator. That gap "could" let too much air pass. More then likely would not, but it overheating did develop that would probably be one of the causes. Have seen cases where the little 1/4" thick seals at the sides of the radiator were missing and that caused overheating. Just that the radiator sealing is critical in sharks.
