Water pumps and alternators have part numbers and date codes so they are part of "matching numbers" . In general any part that has a part number and date code would be considered as a part of the matching numbers game.. But in a way could be a little generic as there is nothing identifying them as specificaly for you cars VIN number. So if you have the correct part number and it is dated anywhere from a week to six mounths BEFORE your car was built it is OK. However.....The Engine, and Some transmissions also have VIN numbers stamped into them that must match the VIN of the car. These are by far the most important items in the matching numbers chain as no two cars could have the same engine/trans stampings. Hope this helps

Yes. There will be a particular # alternator and water pump that was used for your motor application. Both parts will also be dated, the alternator being stamped, while MANY but not all water pumps will have a date cast into them. Those dates should precede the assembly date of your car by a period of no more than 6 months, according to NCRS judging standards. Hope this helps. Chuck

For example, here is a "correct" #330813 SB water pump for 1973-82. You can see the casting number. It is the so-called short pump with 3/4" shaft.

This is a #17059210 distributor for a 1979 L-82 with AT.

Correct number for a 73 350; alternator is 1100544, water pump is 330813. The water pump should be orange not blue for 73.

I assume you have another 73 Vette or had the wrecked one repaired?
Roger
The engine numbers are stamped in the block casting on a pad in front of the passenger side (right) valve cover. For an automatic trans the number is stamped on the left side, toward the rear, at the bottom on a little flat surface. Both numbers will contain the last 5 number of the VIN. The engine has a second number coded for the date and type of engine.
