Tail lites get their ground on the frame on the drivers side by the muffler. Front lites get theirs thru the radiator mount on the passenger side, there is also one from the frame to the birdcage just in front of the drivers door. Main battery is on the frame right by the battery box and the engine ground (main) is on the passenger side motor mount to the starter bracket. One more on the firewall on the AC box, its a tie post that the main engine harness, blower motor and wiper motor all tie to and from there to the bell housing by the starter.
At least thats how my 81 was done

when i step on the brake all the lights come on except the reverse lights and the headlights. and the directionals do nothing.

but one day they all of a sudden started working correctly like it should. that lasted about a week and now i have the problem again.

yes its for my racecar. i know it doesnt matter but its annoying having all the lights come on when i hit the brake pedel

I'm a little confused but thats not hard to do.
When you step on the brakes the parking light bulbs ,turn signal bulbs ,side markers in the front and rear come on ?
We might have to have you give us wire color that is hot when stepping on the brakes.
This can be worked out but I think we are going to have to be clear on exactly what is happening.
One note --- your brake light uses the same wire and is the same bulb as the turn signal , a turn signal is a blinking brake light. If you have actual brake lights then we know you can have turn signals.
One other note,I'm hoping these notes might give you some clues as to whats going on-- when you step on your brake the signal from the brake switch goes up the steering column , through the turn switch and back down the column and then to the rear of the car.
This will be easier to trace if you have a 12v test light.

OK ,Hope you don't mind I stole this from your original thread. This gives us a little more to hash over.

Does anyone know what my problem is?? The car is 100% original wiring and body.

Thanks

Vettekid I think you might have left the ground off at the alt. that grounds the front lights
Try this when you have a min , remove both front side marker light bulbs, see if that changed anything. The way the side markers are wired they can provide a background if the real ground is missing.

There is also a grounding wire running from the speedo/tach gauge cluster housing (under the dash) and over to the door frame. If that is missing or defective, I'm not sure what electrical problems it will cause.

Should be one on the front of the core support, driver's side low, held there with a rusty sheet metal screw.
