There should be enough gas in the carb to start the car, so I doubt its a vapor lock problem. When its hard to start, does holding down the gas pedal help? Do you have to pump it to start it?

yes, i have to pump / feather the gas puddle after it sits for 10 - 30 minutes. it starts the first turnover when hot and usually very good when cold. when cold i pump it a few times before turning it over and then have to feather the gas peddle for a minute or so. thanks.

Normally a warm engine will start without pumping the gas. If you have to pump it more than once, I'd check the accelerator pump.
If you have to hold the pedal down to get it to start, then you're getting too much gas. That would probably be an internal fuel leak or a choke that's coming back on too soon.
