I want to build in a din-sized CD headunit in my 82,but how do I remove the radioconsole?I see the 4 screws in the console, but do I have to remove the carpet too?
Or is it possible to make the standard place for a radio din-size with the radio pushed back, then pull it out and install the new one the same way? That way I don't have to remove the console?
I suppose that where theres a will theres a way. Its difficult to understand exactly what your trying to do without actually seeing it. Another idea would be to replace the stock radio unit with a upgraded model thats designed to fit the car as is. Then add a CD changer and keep it behind the seats in the storage area. My CD changer is wrapped in a carpeted case and just sits back there. It can be moved or completely removed with no trouble. Since its not permanently mounted its easy to stow it away or remove it to avoid theft or when extra space is needed. Ide hate to see you hack the dash all up. Unless the car is already down that road.
To remove the center gauge panel you have to remove the four screws that are visable. Then remove the carpet panels on each side of the console (3 or 4 screws on each side). Then there are 2 screws that go from the console to the center guage panel from underneath the console. Then remove the radio ***** and remove the 2 nut on the dial shafts. The center gauge panel will then come out to give you access to the radio. Be VERY CAREFUL when removing the guage panel on the top. There is a light there that can catch the dash and crack it.
