Hey guys...I got my hands on some R12 and want fresh-in up the charge on my wife's 82. It looks like there is 2 places to connect to on the low pressure side. One is right after the accumulator and the other is right at the compressor. I tried the easiest of the two which is after the accumulator but it wouldn't take the charge. The one at the compressor is impossable to get the hose on.
My questions are.. does it make a difference which fitting is used? If its the one at the compressor is there any hints or lessons learned on making the hose hook-up?
I use the fitting on the back of the compressor without any problem. My hose has a bend at the fitting that hooks up to the compressor fitting. If you add here you want to keep the can upright adding it as gas instead of liquid.
Did you make sure your hose has a pin in the end to depress the schrader valve when you hook it up?
I noticed sometimes when I hook mine up it seems to miss the schrader valve and I get no place. Unhook it and hook it back up usually does the trick.
Is your compressor running when you try to add the freon? If not you need to jump the pressure switch just along side the pass side fender edge.
I like kapsSA also charge my 77 from the fitting at the back of the compressor. Does your 82 have the sight glass to view the refrigerant? As long as you cannot see any bubbles in that sight glass with the compressor engaged your system should be full.
The fitting on my hose is strait and prevents it from fitiing properly. I guess I will have to come up with a different hose which may be a problem for a old R12 system. What is the valve for after the accunulator for?
No sight glass that I can see.

The sight glass should be at the high pressure fitting along the fender.
I used to have to take the belt adjuster bolt out of the compressor
to get the r-12 hose on. I now have a 90 degree fitting for r-134.
On my 82 the low side is located right above the low pressure switch plug.
You may have to unplug the switch and jump it with a wire to get the compressor spinning.
The system is not completly empty. The compressor is just cycling on and off which indicates the system might be low. I'll try it again, maybe I missed the pin on the valve like was previuosly suggested.
