Recently my car ('73 L-48 4 speed) started a weird and loud clunking in the right rear of the car during acceleration..the odd part is that it only seems to happen after the car is driven for a while and it gets hot. Last year I had a new differential put in and the right rear bearing replaced. The clunking seems to happen mostly while turning after being stopped (turning after a red light or stop sign). Today it happened after I went for a 30 minute drive while pulling in my driveway (which is an uphill driveway)...I stopped on the grade and then accelerated while turning left in order to turn the car around and it made the loud clunk during both times that I repeated the exercise...does this sound like a bad u-joint...any thoughts? The car almost feels like I run over a rock when it makes the noise.
I had a similar problem a few years back. It ended up being the half shaft retainer in the rear diff that had sheared off. Jack it up and see if you can pull the tire out towards you, or push it in...if there is a lot of play that could be your problem.
A number of posts say that the modern synthetics work grea, but I chose to use the GM Lube and Posi Additive. Corvette Central carries those, and I'm sure other vendors do as well. My manuals said I would need two of the 23 oz bottles of rear end lube, plus the additive. That left me a few ounces short - order 3 bottles.
Yep dealer has the additive, I used valvoline 90w from the parts store.
Put the additive in first, or you may overfill with lube and not leave enough room. Go to a parking lot and do some figure 8's to work in tha additive.
