Default Plans to break the 12's.

I plan on breaking the 12's before the end of this year. And I know i can't do it with my current 350. Well, I could but, I would spend more money than needed. I would like to get a ZZ4 and put a Crane Power Max roller cam in with these specs. 284/292 .509/.528. with comp cams true roller 1.6:1's. (or do zz4's come with true roller rockers?) Holley 780. MSD Pro-billet because I want to keep my Tach Drive. And then a nice Hooker exhaust. I'd like to keep the 3.08 rear. Is it possible to run a 12' with this motor and a 3.08? or will I need more gear?

Check out the latest issue of HotRod (March 2002).

Instead of a zz4, get the HT383. Since you will be changing cams anyways, why not start with a bigger engine. With 1.6 roller rockers and a comp xe282hr cam, they got 463 hp and 500 tq. They did have to modify the vortec heads for higher lift, and used a thinner head gasket for .5 point higher compression for around $450.00. They also substituted a air gap rpm intake.

I think their dyno is pretty optimistic, but if it is true, you would get your Vette in the mid - low 12's, high 11's with good traction using a 3:73 gear.

Aaron:
11s is a pretty difficult task, not impossible but difficult, especially if you are planning on doing so on street tires. I personally don't think 3.08s and your current tranny are gonna cut it. You either need to ditch your tranny and get a lower geared one, or go with a set of 3.70s. Either way you go you want your effective 1st gear (1st gear ratio * rear end ratio = effective 1st gear) to be around 10 or 11. If you kept the 3.08s you would need to find a tranny with at least a 3.27:1 first gear.

With that in mind I think your best bet for high 11's / low 12's would be a stroker engine. You could stroke your existing engine or purchase a crate engine. That's just my opinion though. Good luck with your quest for 11s  ..... I know I'm still searching :D
